Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22, on which day events worldwide are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Celebrated in more than 193 countries each year since 1970. On Earth Day 2016, the landmark Paris Agreement (climate protection treaty) is to be signed by the United States, China, and some 120 other countries.

In Cyprus, a printer supplies company marks this occasion by issuing The Green Business Award to top companies in Cyprus who have re-used and recycled their empty printer cartridges. These enlightened businesses recognize the importance of sustainability and prefer to have their empty ink and toners collected rather than throw them away says Duncan Glover the franchisee for the Cartridge World brand in Cyprus.

It is amazing what a big difference a relatively small company can make. In the last 14 years Cartridge World in Cyprus has re-used (recycled) over half a million printer cartridges. That equates to saving ¾ of a million kilos of waste from being dumped in landfill. A discarded printer cartridge will take one thousand years to fully degrade in a landfill. It now EU Law (N.215 (I) 2002) requiring a company to have empty printer cartridges collected by a licensed collector.

The re-use, remanufacturing process saves 2.5kg of CO2 per cartridge (about one third of the resources needed to manufacture a new one) and since 2002 Cartridge World has achieved a reduction in Carbon Footprint of 1.4 million kg of CO2 on the island.
